Branding of Operating Systems
- GNU Machine
- Windows PC
- Mac
See how Apple prefers the term "Mac", while Microsoft prefers the term "PC". Free Software distributions on the other hand prefer to go with generic terms like "machine" or "system".
This reflects the intended user-base of these systems, where Apple likes to offer an experience, Windows likes to offer them an assistant, and Free Software gives people the ability to create whatever they want.
my new terminology
GL Firmware.
A GL Firmware is basically what other people refer to as a "Linux Distribution", "Linux Distro", or as the Free Software Foundation like to call it, a "GNU/Linux Distribution" or "GNU Distribution".
Since both projects had a good hand in the naming, and "GNU/Linux" is not particularly pleasant to the ear, I decided to replace it with a better term, called the "GL Firmware".
For those who hate my usage of that term, I'll just say that I'm gonna use it anyways, because I think it's cooler.
